How we’re helping this year
This year, One World Sight Project’s Vanity for Vision fundraiser is raising funds to do the following:
- Purchase a fundus camera to help screen for diabetic retinopathy in Tanzania. This will serve around 1-2 million people!
- Provide 400 people with sight-restoring cataract surgery
What is diabetic retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy is a group of serious eye problems that can lead to blindness. You can read some more information at the National Eye Institute’s page for diabetic retinopathy.
What is a fundus camera?
A fundus camera allows you basically to take a picture of the retina and screen for eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy. And as you can probably tell by the picture, these cost a tiny bit more than your average digital camera. They’re a little more complicated too. Here’s Dr. Anthony Hall talking a little about diabetic retinopathy, as well as retinal surgeons and the lack of them in Africa. We’re hoping to help change that.
