Curing Blindness with BOTOX® Cosmetic: “Vanity for Vision” Highlights Now Online

Newport Beach, CA – February 11, 2011 – One World Sight Project, Inc. announced today that video highlights from Vanity for Vision, the 2010 Eyes of Africa National Cosmetic webathon, are now available for viewing at www.endblindness.org.

The 2010 event, initiated by One World Sight Project founder Richard Weiss, M.D., raised enough to not only restore the sight of 200 Africans needlessly blinded by cataracts, but also to help prevent sight loss in millions of other people through the purchase of special equipment used to screen for diabetic retinopathy in Tanzania.

Vanity for Vision was modeled after the innovative and highly successful 2007 Eyes of Africa National BOTOX Cosmetic® Fundraiser event. Allergan Medical, the manufacturer of BOTOX® Cosmetic, once again donated their product; 18 physicians across the country donated their time and expertise and treated over 180 patients with BOTOX® Cosmetic; and 100% of the proceeds went to One World Sight Project for the cure and prevention of blindness in Africa.

Cataracts are responsible for blindness in almost 3.5 million Africans, but in most cases can be removed by a simple $25-50 procedure that results in a permanent restoration of sight.

The mission of the Eyes of Africa initiative is two-fold: first, to offer immediate relief to people in developing countries who are suffering from curable blindness, and second, to create ongoing access to eye care for millions of people through ophthalmology training and treatment centers. In fact, large portion of proceeds from the 2007 event went toward completion of the very first comprehensive community center for ophthalmology in all of Africa.

Dr. Weiss founded the One World Sight Project in 1988 to combat curable blindness in the developing world. An accomplished musician, he was inspired to act by “One Spirit”, a song he’d written about the plight of the blind. He received personal encouragement from Nelson Mandela and later brought Stevie Wonder on board as Special Advisor to the organization. Today, One World Sight Project’s goal of eliminating curable blindness worldwide has generated excitement and gained extraordinary consensus in the international ophthalmology community.

Highlights from the 2010 Vanity to Vision webathon, including musical performances by The Schubert Bros. Band, blind acapella singing group Outasight, Jimmy Hopper and Gary Matsumoto, can be viewed at www.endblindness.org.
